چکیده

A new model of vertebrate cognition is introduced: maximization of cogency p(abgdj3). This model is shown to be a direct generalization of Aristotelian logic, and to be rigorously related to a calculable quantity. A key aspect of this model is that in Aristotelian logic information environments it functions logically. However, in non-Aristotelian environments, instead of finding the conclusion with the highest probability of being true (a popular past model of cognition); this model instead functions in the manner of the ‘duck test;’ by finding that conclusion which is most supportive of the truth of the assumed facts. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. A Neuromorphic Architecture for Anomaly Detection in Autonomous Large-Area Traffic Monitoring* Special Session

The advanced sensing and imaging capability of today’s sensor networks enables real time monitoring in a large area. In order to provide continuous monitoring and prompt situational awareness, an abstract-level autonomous information processing framework is developed that is able to detect various categories of abnormal traffic events with unsupervised learning. The framework is based on cogent...

Bio-inspired computing with resistive memories - models, architectures and applications

The traditional Von Neumann architecture has constrained the potential for applying massively parallel architecture to embedded high performance computing where we must optimize the size, weight and power of the system. Inspired by highly parallel biological systems, such as the human brain, the neuromorphic architecture offers a promising novel computing paradigm for compact and energy efficie...

SYMPOSIA — INTRODUCTION Telling It Like It Isn ’ t : The Cognitive Neuroscience of

Patients who confabulate provide information or act based on information that is obviously false or that is clearly inappropriate for the context of retrieval. The patients are unaware of these falsehoods, which has led Moscovitch ( 1989 ) to coin the term “honest lying” to describe this intriguing symptom. Patients with confabulation will sometimes cling to their false beliefs even when confro...

Neural networks for word recognition: Is a hidden layer necessary?

We study neural network models that learn location invariant orthographic representations for printed words. We compare two model architectures: with and without a hidden layer. We find that both architectures succeed in learning the training data and in capturing benchmark phenomena of skilled reading – transposed-letter and relative-position priming. Networks without a hidden layer use a stra...

Cursive Word Recognition Based on Interactive Activation and Early Visual Processing Models

We present an off-line cursive word recognition system based completely on neural networks: reading models and models of early visual processing. The first stage (normalization) preprocesses the input image in order to reduce letter position uncertainty; the second stage (feature extraction) is based on the feedforward model of orientation selectivity; the third stage (letter pre-recognition) i...
